A minimum of 64 individuals were killed in a security raid cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's records.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.

Violent conflicts commenced when about 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command responded with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body said it was "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas near the city's international airport is considered to be the headquarters of a major organised crime groups.

Local authorities stated a minimum of 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Many residents were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community Response

Residents have described the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the operation began.

Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.

Criminal Expansion

The criminal network has been growing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the mission, along with multiple guns.

Operation Background

The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Dozens of the suspects are believed to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.
