Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 others were hurt in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a country home in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence in the vicinity of the Verona region to enforce an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three officers killed served in the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female got detained at the scene and a third person who fled after the incident was found soon after. All three have been transported to the hospital.

The explosion could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the area displayed the building left as a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to displace the three family members in the past.

Financial Context

The leader of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, explained the farmhouse was subject to an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents triggered the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Claudio Papagno told the media.

A propane tank had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our personnel,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the incident comprised eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The official thought the detonation had occurred on a floor above the access point and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the propane tanks being opened”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to local news, adding that the family members had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
