Leeds Keep The Reds at Arm's Length to Secure Hard-Fought Point at Anfield

A pair of unbeaten runs continued intact at Anfield, but only one side could take real satisfaction from the result. Leeds United executed a textbook game plan of stifling and restricting Liverpool, with the maiden goalless draw of Arne Slot's reign underscoring the persistent issues behind the current champions' latest recovery.

Resolute Masterclass Earns Crucial Result

A drab goalless draw, the first in 84 fixtures for Slot's team, was primarily attributable to the defensive dominance of the excellent defensive duo Struijk and Bijol, combined with the home side's inability to unlock a compact Leeds defence. Liverpool were limited to speculative half-chances, and a sprinkling of discontent could be heard around the stadium at the final signal on a sluggish display.

"If I don't use the entire squad and we have a schedule like this, I would not do this," the manager stated. "With a footballer like Dominic I have to look after him. We all know his past history was difficult. He is in incredible shape but it's important I manage him and sometimes the head needs to win over the heart."

The Hosts' Frustration in Front of Goal

Liverpool initially displayed more energy and sharpness than in previous matches, with Jeremie Frimpong prominent on the flank. Nevertheless, golden opportunities were scarce. Their best moments in the opening period involved forward Hugo Ekitiké.

  • Following a smart exchange with Curtis Jones, the France international cut inside and drew a stop from goalkeeper Lucas Perri at his front post.
  • The visitors' goalkeeper could not hold the effort, requiring a crucial block from James Justin to prevent Florian Wirtz tapping in the rebound.
  • Ekitiké later sprinted through onto a long ball but was impeded by Jaka Bijol; despite not going down, his shouts for a spot-kick were waved away.

Missed Opportunities Prove Costly

Ekitiké's evening was compounded when he did not manage to find the net with his best chance. Connecting with a swift Frimpong delivery in the goal area, the striker misdirected a header that hit the Perri while with an open goal.

For Leeds, their most notable opportunity arrived from an Alisson mistake. The experienced shot-stopper sent a wayward pass directly to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose first-time shot returned towards goal was gathered by the recovering goalkeeper.

Turgid Final Stages

The contest descended into a scrappy encounter, devoid on incident. Dominik Szoboszlai, returning from a ban, tested Perri from range. The resulting scramble resulted in Ampadu handling the ball, giving the hosts a set-piece in a promising position, which Wirtz sent into the defence.

The Liverpool manager made a triple substitution to bring urgency, and soon after Virgil van Dijk came close to nodding his team in ahead from a set-piece, his effort bouncing just wide the post.

Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had continued his goal run for the visitors in the closing stages, but his tap-in was ruled out for a marginal offside call. In the end, both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.
