The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... Currently.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the hit series coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response
One could easily to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Does the showrunner Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “yet we stand ready to throw out a solid concept for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
