For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress constructed from the recollections of Vecna. Their quest for an escape route in episode 6 has them experience a defining event from Henry's childhood—a moment that potentially carries the key to defeating him once and for all.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.

In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the trauma involved more than a fight for life.

Like many elements this season, the full story behind the mine shaft incident originates in the stage play the prequel play.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to give to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their version of the tests. This spy in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is understood of Brenner's work, the case would assuredly have samples of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, causing the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the children under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the case could have held dark matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The stage play explains that the boy was transported in the Abyss, returning after half a day with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he battles the influence of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

Confronting Terror

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a showdown between the monster and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to gain strength.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the endgame conflict that awaits.
