The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
